Semi-portal cranes, also known as semi-goliath or semi-gantry cranes, are a variation on the goliath crane concept and run on one floor rail and one high level rail mounted on columns or a building structure. Semi-goliath cranes are suitable for the applications described above for full goliath cranes but they bring unique advantages in certain applications. In particular they bring specific benefits where they are specified to run beneath overhead cranes in production facilities to give localized hook service to production cells down one side of a bay and the overhead crane provides general hook service of the whole bay. They may also operate under a gantry crane cantilever as shown in the adjacent application picture.

From the photo you can see that semi portal crane is a kind of crane between bridge crane and gantry crane. The semi portal crane has only one outrigger, and the other end of the crane is supported on the load-bearing beam of the workshop like an overhead crane. Its lifting mechanism, trolley running mechanism and bridge structure are basically the same as those of the bridge crane, and the rated lifting capacity is no more than 20 tons for semi portal crane.

Rail-less Semi-Portal crane is equipped with polyurethane tire wheels and guide rollers to allow the lower carriage to run directly on the factory floor without rails. Most factory floors are suitable for the tyre wheel loads which are similar to those of a forklift truck of similar capacity. Having no floor rail allows the greater flexibility required by many production processes and removes a potential trip hazard. Standard rail-less Semi-Goliath cranes are available in single and double girder construction in capacities up to 15 ton.
